About us

We’re Dave and Julie, the husband-and-wife team behind Velvet Hippo Customs. We traded Colorado for North Carolina about five years ago to get closer to the water — and we haven’t looked back.

When we’re not creating, you’ll usually find us out on our boat, grabbing a bite to eat, or just enjoying the picturesque little town we live in. Julie loves reading, watercolor painting and her monthly Bunco night, while Dave enjoys woodworking, golf and cheering on his alma mater, the Florida Gators.

We’re big-time dog people, especially when it comes to rescue and pit bull advocacy. We started this side hustle mostly because our dogs — who adopted us by the way — seem to be trying to get all the frequent flyer miles they can at our local vet office.

We love what we do and hope to share a little of that joy with you. Thanks for stopping by and supporting our small business❤️ (and If you don’t know what a velvet hippo is, we’d love to tell you)!

What is a velvet hippo?

A velvet hippo is an affectionate name for a bully breed dog, thanks to their often hippo-shaped bodies and velvet-soft fur. After many years in rescue, we developed a huge affection for bully breeds and their loving nature, and we wanted our name to reflect that passion.
